Simpson 'toughest of the decisions' for Captain Watson

RSS

NEW YORK – While U.S. Ryder Cup captain Tom Watson ended up making Webb Simpson his “swing” pick on Tuesday night, he said it was the most difficult of his three choices.

“Webb was the toughest of the decisions. He had some good play and some bad play lately,” said Watson, who also picked Keegan Bradley and Webb Simpson. “There were other people in the mix.”

Among those who didn’t make Watson’s cut were Ryan Moore, who finished 11th on the final U.S. point list, Bill Haas (28th in points) and Ryan Palmer (18th). But perhaps the most surprising revelation involved a player who isn’t even a PGA Tour member yet.

“I even thought about Brooks Koepka, honestly,” he said. “I asked around and did a lot of scouting.”

Koepka, 24, has played on the European Tour the last two seasons and locked up his Tour card for next season with a tie for fourth place at the U.S. Open.

Watson said he made between six to eight phone calls on Tuesday to tell players their fate, including Jason Dufner who was inside the automatic qualifiers until the last month before being sidelined with a neck injury.
