Like Spieth, 17-year-old Scheffler making noise at Nelson

IRVING, Texas – The comparisons are unmistakable.

Four years ago, 16-year-old Jordan Spieth, the reigning U.S. Junior Amateur champion made the cut here at the Byron Nelson. This week, it’s Scottie Scheffler, 17, who is also the reigning Junior Am champion, making the cut at his hometown tourney.

Scheffler opened with scores of 71-68 at his first-career PGA Tour event to ensure he’ll be playing two more rounds on the weekend.

“I think I've proven a lot, because I really haven't been hitting fairways, which was my goal, and just keep the ball in play, see what I could do,” said Scheffler, who like Spieth will attend the University of Texas. “But I haven't been doing that, and I still played pretty decent so that gives me a lot of confidence.”
