Spieth finishes T-19 despite 'pretty messed up' ankle

SAN DIEGO – Jordan Spieth’s second-round 63 Friday playing alongside Tiger Woods is now even more impressive.

The 20-year-old accomplished the feat while playing on a bum ankle.

Spieth revealed thatinjury update after a 75-75 weekend at the Farmers Insurance Open dropped him from a share of second place all the way to joint 19th. He lifted up his right pants leg to show a wrap around the right ankle.

Spieth doesn’t where or how he hurt the ankle, but that it is “pretty messed up.”

“I felt it the second day on the back nine and I guess from there I just stopped loading as well on it and I started missing fairways,” he said Sunday.

“I don’t remember where; it just started hurting, stepped wrong somewhere. I couldn’t hit balls after the round. Obviously, it didn’t affect the round on Friday, but I just didn’t hit any fairways from there. I didn’t feel pain at all, so I don’t blame it on that whatsoever, but whatever it was, I wasn’t loading correctly and therefore I started hitting them left going left, really, with every club.”

Spieth hit just 12 of 28 fairways over the weekend, managing only four birdies.

He will take a week off before teeing up at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.
