Spieth, Fowler on list of top millennial athletes

RSS

Jordan Spieth and Rickie Fowler are the two of the most popular athletes among the coveted millennial demographic, according to a recent report from 120 Sports.

This week the media group unveiled its second annual "Millennials' Athlete Index," the goal of which is to rank the athletes "mattering most to millennials" using a combination of consumer trends, survey data and social analytics. The demographic is loosely defined as those born between 1980 and approximately 2000.

The top-40 list, which was topped by NBA superstar Stephen Curry, included only two golfers. Spieth came in at No. 17 after a year that included five wins, two majors and the FedEx Cup title. At age 22, he was the second-youngest athlete to make the list behind only 20-year-old Kristaps Porzingis of the New York Knicks.

Fowler came in at No. 35, behind running back Le'Veon Bell and ahead of NHL star Patrick Kane. This is the second straight year that Fowler has made the top 40, and it follows a season where the 27-year-old won three times including The Players.

Besides Curry, the top 10 included NFL star J.J. Watt, outfielder Mike Trout, soccer star Alex Morgan, quarterback Cam Newton, former NL MVP Andrew McCutchen, soccer star Lionel Messi, outfielder Kris Bryant, pitcher Clayton Kershaw and wide receiver Antonio Brown. Here is a look at the full ranking of the 40 athletes that made the list.
