Stenson (76) struggles in Abu Dhabi; Rose shoots 73

Henrik Stenson might feel more refreshed at the start of the year, but his season got off to a rocky start Thursday with an opening 76 that left him 113th in the 125-man field.

Stenson began his day with a double-bogey 7 on his opening hole (par-5 10th), then made 11 consecutive pars before bogeys on Nos. 4 and 9.

The world No. 2 missed the cut here last year and will need a good round Friday to stick around for the weekend. He hasn’t finished in the top 20 in this event since 2008.

At least the Swede kept his sense of humor after his opening round:

The early struggles were a surprise given his recent results. His last missed cut worldwide was the Honda Classic last March, and he has top-three finishes in four of his last five starts, including the victory in the season-ending DP World Tour Championship in November.

Justin Rose (73) and Ryder Cup star Jamie Donaldson (73) also failed to break par in the opening round at Abu Dhabi Golf Club.
