KAPALUA, Hawaii – Justin Thomas, who has been friends with Jordan Spieth since they were 14 years old, said the world No. 1’s play the last two years motivated him during his rookie year on the PGA Tour in 2015.
Thomas earned his breakthrough victory on Tour last fall at the CIMB Classic. He trails Spieth in victories, but Thomas does have one advantage over him.
Thomas won the 2007 Evian Junior Masters, beating Spieth by an estimated seven or eight shots, and was picked to play in the Evian Masters pro-am with Juli Inkster during which he had Spieth caddie for him.
“He probably pulled a couple wrong clubs,” Thomas laughed on Tuesday at Kapalua. “He was good.”
Asked if he ever caddied for Spieth during their junior days, Thomas quickly dismissed the idea.
“I wouldn’t want to. That would be a lot to deal with,” he joked.
