PALM HARBOR, Fla. – Just moments before Jordan Spieth made his way to the media center for his Wednesday press conference, officials from the PGA Tour, Valspar and Innisbrook gathered to announce a three-year extension of the company’s title sponsorship of this week's Tampa-area event through 2020.
Those two events might be related.
Spieth began his charge to what became a historic season at the Valspar Championship last year, winning a playoff for his second Tour title and virtually assuring he’d be back in the Tampa area this week.
The world No. 1 highlights an increasingly deep field at Innisbrook, which just three years ago faced a much more challenging future.
“If you look back to that point in time in 2013 where we were uncertain as to who the future title would be and you look at where we are today, there's been nothing but incredible progress,” said Jay Monahan, the Tour’s deputy commissioner.
Wednesday’s extension was the first time in the event’s history a title sponsor has extended its contract.
