PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – Jimmy Walker began the final round at The Players 10 strokes behind and nearly three hours ahead of the leaders. But when he birdied the par-5 ninth, visions of an epic comeback began dancing through his head.
Walker turned in 4-under 32 and after an eagle at the 11th moved to 8 under for the week, four strokes out of the lead. He cut that to three strokes with birdies at Nos. 13 and 16 but ran out of holes and heroics late and played his last two in 1 over.
“There wasn’t any wind for the first 14 or 15 holes. It picked up a little but not as much as it did the last three days,” said Walker, who finished with a 65 for a 9 under total. “After I birdied (No.) 9 from the back bunker and then the eagle at No. 11 I was like here we go.”
Walker was tied for sixth when he left the golf course and if there was any consolation he likely wrapped up his spot on this year’s Ryder Cup team with yet another top-10 finish. He began the week third on the U.S. points list.
