Chris Crawford knew he needed to make a birdie on his final hole on Monday to get into the U.S. Open. The odds weren't in his favor. He had just missed a 3-footer for par on No. 17 on the North Course at Canoe Brook in Summit, N.J. And now he faced a 40-footer on the last of his 36 holes of sectional qualifying.
And then this happened:
Crawford, who just finished his senior season at Drexel University, shot 65-73 to finish at 6 under par and grab one of six available spots for Oakmont Country Club, next week.
"It was just an unbelievable moment," he said. "I'll probably get there as early as they're going to let me get out there, and enjoy the week."
