Watch list: Reed up to No. 4 on Ryder Cup points list

RSS

This could be the most hotly contested Ryder Cup ever – and we’re talking about just making the team.

So, each Monday, GolfChannel.com will take a way-too-early look at the players who are vying for one of the 12 spots on the team. Nine players make the squad via their respective points list, and both captain Tom Watson and Paul McGinley will have three wild-card picks apiece.

AMERICANS

The current top 12:

1. Jimmy Walker, 3,861

2. Dustin Johnson, 3,759

3. Bubba Watson, 3,018

4. Patrick Reed, 3,008

5. Jason Dufner, 2,574

6. Phil Mickelson, 2,537

7. Harris English, 2,519

8. Zach Johnson, 2,365

9. Webb Simpson, 2,201

10. Ryan Moore, 2,161

11. Chris Kirk, 2,025

12. Kevin Stadler, 1,674

Notes:

• Bubba Watson moved from No. 7 to No. 3 on the list after his T-2 finish at Doral. In his past four starts, the 2012 Masters champion has a victory, a pair of runners-up and another top-10 finish.

• Dustin Johnson continues to rack up points – a player receives a point for every $1,000 earned – after his T-4 finish in Miami. In his last six stroke-play events on the PGA Tour, DJ has finished no worse than sixth.

• Patrick Reed returned to the top 12 in a big way with his victory at Doral, his third PGA Tour title since August. Now No. 4, he seems a likely pick for Gleneagles, not only because of his explosive game but also because of his supreme confidence.

• Phil Mickelson’s stock continues to drop, and he’s now No. 6 in the standings. He was near the top of the list for months because of his major victory at the Open.

• This week’s Where is Tiger? update: He improved from No. 39 to No. 35 after his T-25 finish at Doral, the first time he has completed all 72 holes in a PGA Tour event this season.

Notes:

• Jamie Donaldson made notable moves on both points lists after his T-2 finish at Doral. The Welshman had a chance to win Sunday, but he played too conservatively on the 16th hole, leading to a par, and then made bogey on the 72nd hole.

• Stephen Gallacher finished joint sixth at Doral, and this week he cracked the top 10 on both points lists.
