Watch: McIlroy can't escape water hazard in Dubai

It took Rory McIlroy 14 holes before he made his first birdie in the first round of the DP World Tour Championship. And then he added another at No. 15. And then he gave both away at No. 16.

Playing from the fairway on the par-4 16th, McIlroy pushed his approach shot inside the hazard line, right of the green. His ball managed to sit up in a puddle of water, rather than dive into the lake, and McIlroy decided to play his third shot without a drop. He made a big splash but failed to extricate his ball.

McIlroy then removed his right shoe, dug in again and took another swipe from a slightly different area inside the hazard line. He got his ball onto the green and two-putted for a double bogey-6.

McIlroy, who dropped four shots in his first 10 holes, fell back to 4 over for the tournament and two spots removed from last place in the 60-man field.
