Matt Kuchar has qualified for the team, but withdrew from the PGA Championship because of a back injury. Jason Dufner lost his automatic spot in the final week of qualification, and while he finished No. 10 on the points list, it remains to be seen when he will return to competition as he deals with two bulging discs in his neck.
A potential solution for Watson, should he need an injury replacement on short notice? Steve Stricker.
Stricker has played in each of the last three Ryder Cups, compiling a 3-7-1 individual record. He was named last week as Watson's third assistant captain, joining Andy North and Raymond Floyd, and while he has played sparingly in 2014, Stricker did tie for seventh at Valhalla after four straight rounds in the 60s. He finished the qualification process 29th on the U.S. points list.
Watson noted Monday that he is keenly aware of the 47-year-old's ability to pinch-hit in Scotland, should it become necessary.
"Well, I told Steve to bring his golf clubs over with him, if that's any indication of what I might do," Watson said.
