Watson walks away with Hero World Challenge title

Bubba Watson authored a final-round 66 to cruise to a three-shot victory Sunday at the Hero World Challenge. Here’s how Watson walked to his win in the Bahamas:

Leaderboard: Watson (-25), Patrick Reed (-22), Rickie Fowler (-21), Jordan Spieth (-20), Bill Haas (-19), Paul Casey (-19)

What it means: This is Watson’s ninth worldwide victory and second win this season after taking the Travelers in June. Up two to start the day, Watson made seven birdies, dropping his only shot on his final hole. Watson originally turned down an invitation to this event, worrying that he’d be unable to get his children’s travel documents completed. But after Jason Day withdrew from the Hero following the birth of his second child, Watson was able to get his family to Albany and win the tournament. His bogey at 18 left him one shot short of Jordan Spieth's tournament scoring record of 26-under 262, set last year at Isleworth. All this after he started the week, saying the golf course is "better than I am."

Round of the day: After three less-than-stellar days on his home track, Justin Rose set a new course record Sunday with a 10-under-par 62. Rose made five birdies on each side without dropping a shot. A course record of 63 had been set by both Watson and Paul Casey on Saturday.

Best of the rest: Rickie Fowler and J.B. Holmes both posted rounds of 8-under 64. Both players made nine birdies against a lone bogey. Fowler, who went out in 30, managed to move into solo third.

Biggest disappointment: This too goes to Albany-resident Rose, for failing to break 70 in his first three rounds. His record round Sunday left him 13th out of 18 players at 13 under par for the week.

Shot of the day: After finding one of Albany’s ever-present native areas, Watson played this pitch from the sand, through the bushes and up the hill to set up a birdie at the par-5 11th:

Quote of the day: “Michael, we’re 46 under in this event the last two years.” - Spieth
