AUGUSTA, Ga. – It’s been suggested that Augusta National is a left-hander’s golf course.
The recent winner’s list might help prove that claim.
With Bubba Watson’s victory, lefties have now accounted for six of the last 12 Masters titles. That includes three for Phil Mickelson (2004, ’06, ’10), two for Watson (2012, ’14) and one for Mike Weir (2003).
When asked to explain the phenomenon earlier this week, Watson said, “Lefties are the best. No, I don't see it. You know, I like to cut the ball; a righty likes to draw the ball. Throughout history, I know there's more lefties now on Tour, but throughout history righties have won more than lefties. I just like to cut the ball, so it works out good at this golf course for me cutting it off the tee.”
Prior to Weir, no lefty had won the Masters and only one, Bob Charles at the 1963 British Open, had won a major championship.
