Why not Couples for captain? Everyone wanted Love

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. – When the U.S. Ryder Cup task force first met in December it immediately became clear Davis Love III, who captained the 2012 team, was the man to lead the next American squad.

When the 11-member panel reconvened earlier this month in San Diego for the second time the group voted, unanimously, to name Love next year’s captain.

What is not so certain is why Fred Couples, an early leader to be named the next captain, didn’t warrant more consideration. Couples talked with PGA chief executive Pete Bevacqua in December before the initial task force meeting and planned to talk with PGA president Derek Sprague, but he never got the chance.

Two weeks ago in San Diego Couples told GolfChannel.com he would, “love to [captain a U.S. Ryder Cup team].”

As for why Couples didn’t get the job – and there remain suggestions he could serve as an assistant captain next year as a possible tune up to the top job – no one on the task force would say.

“I don’t think it’s a question of why it’s not Fred, or why it’s not someone else. It’s why it’s Davis. He seemed to be the right person at the right time for what the Ryder Cup is trying to do,” Bevacqua said. “When you are talking to the players and captains he was the person who emerged. It felt like an obvious choice.”
