Wie could end up in two playoffs

NAPLES, Fla. – The LPGA wanted a big-bang finish to its season, and it’s possible that could include a pair of sudden-death playoffs with Michelle Wie on Sunday at Tiburon Golf Club.

It’s possible the day could end with a playoff to decide who wins the CME Group Tour Championship and then a separate playoff to decide who wins the Race to the CME Globe.

In fact, it’s possible Wie could end up in both playoffs.

If Wie finishes tied for the lead at the Tour Championship through 72 holes, and Stacy Lewis finishes seventh, it sets up the possibility Wie could tee it up in back-to-back sudden-death playoffs.

If Wie got into a Tour Championship playoff and lost, she would end up with 6,000 Race to the CME Globe points. If Lewis finishes seventh in the Tour Championship, she would also end up with 6,000 points. In this scenario, if no other player gets more than 6,000 points, Wie and Lewis would play off for the $1 million Globe jackpot.

The sudden-death playoffs would begin at the 18th hole and continue to be played on the 18th hole until a winner is decided. If playoffs for both the Tour Championship and Race to the Globe are required, the format will depend on who is in the Tour Championship and how many players are in it. Whether the LPGA would have a twosome go off to decide the Tour Championship and then a twosome to decide who wins the Race to the Globe depends on who is in the first playoff.
