Michelle Wie withdrew from the Meijer LPGA Classic after just nine holes Thursday, citing a hand injury.
According to an MLive.com report, Wie went from the ninth green at Blythefield Country Club directly to the LPGA's medical trailer and emerged with a bandage on her right wrist and hand.
"It started hurting last week and it started getting worse," said Wie, who played her first nine holes 5 over. "It got to the point where I couldn't really hold a club today."
Wie is in the midst of a career year and broke through to win the U.S. Women's Open in June but since has had some trouble maintaining the momentum. She missed the cut at both the Ricoh Women's British Open and Marathon Classic in her two most recent starts before this week's event in Grand Rapids, Mich.
Sorry I had to WD today. Thank you @meijer for hosting an amazing event. I hope to be better soon!— Michelle Wie (@themichellewie) August 7, 2014
The Wegman's LPGA Championship - the fourth of five LPGA majors this season - is on deck next week in Pittsford, N.Y. It remains to be seen if Wie will be able to tee it up.
"I'm going to get an MRI right now and see what my next steps are," she said. "Hopefully I'll be able to play next week. We'll see."
