Wie loses 36-hole lead, closes with 73 in Arkansas

RSS

Michelle Wie finally ran out of gas after the busiest week of her life.

Leading by two at the start of the final round of the NW Arkansas Championship, Wie managed only one birdie during a Sunday 73 that left her in a tie for eighth, four shots behind winner Stacy Lewis.

It was a testament to Wie’s current form that she was even in a position to win, after a whirlwind media tour that followed her U.S. Women’s Open triumph. She arrived in Rogers, Ark., only two days before the event began, then posted consecutive rounds of 66 to sit at 10-under 132, two shots clear.

On Sunday, Wie began with eight consecutive pars to lose her lead, then made three consecutive bogeys on Nos. 9-11 to tumble down the leaderboard. Her birdie on the par-3 17th was her only birdie of the day.

Even with the disappointing finish, it was her 10th top 10 of the season.
