So much for a post-victory hangover.
Five days after hoisting the trophy at the U.S. Women's Open, Michelle Wie picked up right where she left off, carding an opening-round 66 at the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship. At 5 under, she was tied for second upon completing her round, one shot behind Alena Sharp.
Wie started slowly at Pinnacle Country Club, playing her first 10 holes in 1 under, but built some momentum with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 11 and 12. She added two more birdies on holes 15 and 18, completing her opening round without dropping a shot. She hit seven of 13 fairways, reached 14 of 18 greens and took just 28 putts.
Wie has been a perennial contender this year on the LPGA, and appears in position to continue that trend this week in Arkansas. In addition to her breakthrough win at Pinehurst, Wie won earlier this season at the LPGA Lotte Championship in her native Hawaii and has nine top-10 finishes in 13 starts this year. Entering this week, she tops the season-long money list and ranks second in the Race to the CME Globe.
