SAN DIEGO – Torrey Pines usually serves as the perfect launching pad for Tiger Woods.
This year, he will have to erase a nine-shot deficit over the weekend to win for a record ninth time (including the 2008 U.S. Open) at Torrey Pines. At T-50, it is his lowest position on the leaderboard through 36 holes.
That said, Woods pointed out Friday that he has had comebacks here before – in 1999, he trailed by nine after two rounds, then shot 62-65 to top Billy Ray Brown by two shots. In 2006 and ’07, Woods trailed by seven shots at the halfway point before going on to win.
“It’s a four-round tournament,” Woods said. “I’m at 1 (under) now and hopefully I can get off to a quick start tomorrow and get to 5 (under) and then get going from there.”
