Woods turns in 1-over 36 after shaky Open start

HOYLAKE, England – Tiger Woods has steadied himself after a shaky start Thursday at the Open Championship.

Woods started his first round with bogeys on Nos. 1 and 2, but he made birdie on the par-5 fifth to return to 1 over par. He made the turn in 1-over 36 and sat four off the early lead at Royal Liverpool.

This is Woods’ first major round of 2014, after he missed both the Masters and U.S. Open because of injury. The former world No. 1 won the Open the last time it was held here at Hoylake, in 2006. That week he shot 18-under 270.

After hitting only one driver all week at Royal Liverpool in ’06, Woods had yet to hit a driver by the time he made the turn Thursday. Nonetheless, he hit seven fairways and seven greens.
