You Oughta Know: U.S. Amateur semifinalists

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. – Only four players remain at the 114th U.S. Amateur.

Fred Wedel and Gunn Yang will tee off at 8 a.m. ET Saturday, while Corey Conners and Denny McCarthy will follow at 8:20 a.m. 

Here is what You Oughta Know about the semifinalists at Atlanta Athletic Club:

Frederick Wedel, 19, of Roseville, Calif.

• Born Aug. 20, 1994 in Anchorage, Alaska
• No. 619 in World Amateur Golf Ranking™
• Playing in his second USGA championship and first U.S. Amateur
• A rising junior at Pepperdine University who is a business administration major
• Advanced to 2014 NCAA Regionals in Eugene, Ore., as an individual
• Earned All-West Coast Conference honorable mention recognition as a sophomore
• Tied for 13th at this year’s WCC Championship and was 23rd as a freshman
• Finished in top 10 at six tournaments in his first two seasons at Pepperdine
• Chosen all-state and was a district champion at The Woodlands High School in Texas


Gunn Yang, 20, of San Diego, Calif.
• Born Sept. 30, 1993 in Pyeong Chang, Korea
• No. 776 in World Amateur Golf Ranking™
• Competing in his first USGA championship
• A sophomore-to-be at San Diego State University 
• Played in just four tournaments and was treated for a herniated disc
• Underwent laser endoscopic spinal surgery following his freshman year
• Medalist at the La Habra Heights, Calif., sectional qualifier with rounds of 69-71
• Fourth at this year’s Southern California Golf Association (SCGA) Amateur (6-under 282)
• Fifth at the Los Angeles City Championship and tied for fifth at the San Diego City Championship
• Went to elementary school in Republic of Korea, lived in Australia for five years and attended Torrey Pines (Calif.) High School


Corey Conners, 22, of Canada

• Born Jan. 6, 1992 in Kitchener, Ontario
• No. 44 in World Amateur Golf Ranking™
• Playing in his third U.S. Amateur and has advanced to quarterfinals for second consecutive year
• Reached U.S. Amateur semifinals last year and Round of 64 in 2012
• 2014 North & South Amateur runner-up (to Will Cromie) at Pinehurst No. 2
• 2013-14 Mid-American Conference (MAC) Co-Player of the Year at Kent State University
• Three-time All-MAC selection and received school’s 2014 outstanding male athlete award
• Played in this year’s PGA Tour RBC Canadian Open and competed for his country in the 2012 World Amateur Team Championship and the 2013 Copa de las Americas


Denny McCarthy, 21, of Rockville, Md.

• Born March 4, 1993 in Takoma Park, Md.
• No. 36 in World Amateur Golf Ranking™
• Competing in his sixth consecutive U.S. Amateur and advanced past Round of 64 for first time
• Previously reached match play in 2010, 2011 and 2012
• A rising senior at the University of Virginia, he was a consensus 2014 second-team All-American
• Tied for sixth at this year’s NCAA Championship with a 54-hole score of 206 (4 under)
• 2014 Atlantic Coast Conference runner-up and 2012 ACC Freshman of the Year
• Tied for second at this year’s Porter Cup with a final-round 65
