From a 19-year-old hotshot to a 51-year-old journeyman, six amateurs will make their Masters debuts this week at Augusta National. Here’s what you need to know about the group (listed in alphabetical order and projected finish):
World Amateur Ranking: 2
Notable achievements: Won 2013 U.S. Amateur; earned low-amateur honors at 2013 British Open; 2013 GB&I Walker Cup member; 2012 British Boys champion
Skinny: Fitzpatrick isn’t the longest hitter, but his short game (and a firm-and-fast setup) gives him an excellent opportunity to make the cut this week. Having left Northwestern after only one semester, the Englishman has focused full-time on golf, and a good performance this week could convince him to turn pro before his remaining two major exemptions.
World Amateur Ranking: 7
Notable achievements: Won Asia-Pacific Amateur; won on Korean Tour; won Korean amateur title by 14; T-2 at Korean Open
Skinny: His breakthrough 2013 campaign included three amateur victories and a title on the Korean Tour. Now among the top-10 amateurs in the world.
World Amateur Ranking: 15
Notable achievements: 2013 U.S. Amateur runner-up; two-time winner at University of Tennessee
Skinny: The Australian showed his immense skill at the U.S. Amateur and he’s been steady, if unspectacular, during his sophomore season at Tennessee, winning once and posting five top-10 finishes.
World Amateur Ranking: 10
Notable achievements: 2013 U.S. Amateur Public Links champion; 2013 Western Amateur champion; 2013 U.S. Walker Cup team member
Skinny: The Oklahoma State sophomore was one of the revelations of 2013, winning the APL and Western Amateur in the span of a month. This season, Niebrugge has one victory in nine college starts.
World Amateur Ranking: 8
Notable achievements: 2013 British Amateur champion; 2013 Scottish Open champion; 2013 GB&I Walker Cup member
Skinny: The Englishman is a consistent contender on the international amateur circuit, and last fall he tied for 14th at the European Tour’s Dunhill Links Championship. During his college career at Tennessee, he had seven top-10 finishes.
World Amateur Ranking: 180
Notable achievements: 2013 U.S. Mid-Amateur champion
Skinny: The Iowan earned his first USGA title in convincing fashion, dominating the 36-hole final. Earlier this year, he finished fourth at the Jones Cup, one of the strongest amateur events on the schedule.
