New approach: Mickelson tinkering with wedges

RSS

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Phil Mickelson usually approaches a media session with a message to deliver.

Last year, here at the Masters, he pushed his Phrankenwood. You may recall the unfortunate tax comments from a year ago. In the past he really wanted to promote issues regarding his psoriatic arthritis.

This time though, Mickelson let it slip. Or did he?

Mickelson claims that he’s never, I repeat never, had to play a shot between 90-130 yards at the Masters over the last few years – six or seven by his count.

“I’ve never really talked about it, I don’t know why I am now, it’s just kind of a novelty,” he said Tuesday.

So Mickelson’s theory is that he can take out both his sand wedge and gap wedge this week because he won’t ever need either.

“I don’t really need a special club this week,” he said. “I’ll put a 64-degree wedge in, that will be one of them. But again, I’ve got two free ones, so what’s the other one?

“I’m not going to play with 13 clubs, but I don’t know what the 14th club is going to be. I’ll throw one in, the sand or gap wedge in, just out of default but I don’t ever use them here.”
