Pettersen WDs from Kraft Nabisco Championship

RSS

Shortly after Tiger Woods announced Tuesday he will miss next week’s Masters after undergoing back surgery, women’s golf lost one of its top players to its first major of the year with a back ailment.

Suzann Pettersen withdrew from this week’s Kraft Nabisco Championship about an hour after Woods announced his withdrawal.

Pettersen, 32, said in a statement that she is suffering from an aggravated disc. She withdrew from the Kia Classic last week after back pain arose following a workout. She’s No. 2 in the Rolex women’s world rankings.

“It's so unfortunate that I can't compete this week,” Pettersen said in an LPGA release. “I dearly love this event and would do anything to play. At this point, I just need to be smart and not make a bad situation worse.”

David Leadbetter, Pettersen’s swing coach, told GolfChannel.com last week that she didn’t hurt herself playing golf. He said she was coming out of a workout on Monday of last week and felt stiffness in her back. She was stricken with back spasms shortly after that. Pettersen is one of the tour’s most devoted workout warriors.

Pettersen is undergoing treatment in hopes of returning to play as quickly as possible. No timetable for her return has been set.

While Pettersen has never won the Kraft Nabisco, she has a strong record in it. She has finished second in it three times and tied for third last year.
