Tiger Woods Charity Playoffs to begin in May

This summer will mark the start of the inaugural Tiger Woods Charity Playoffs, the latest in a series of golf events that benefit the Tiger Woods Foundation as well as local youth charities.

The year-long amateur series will visit some of the top courses in the U.S., including former U.S. Open venues like Congressional, Merion and Myopia Hunt, a course outside Boston that last hosted the season's second major in 1908.

A total of eight regional qualifiers will be held across the country in the coming months, with the series culminating in a national final Dec. 1-2 at Lake Nona in Orlando, Fla. The various regional competitions will be open to two-person amateur teams, who will pay a base registration fee while also tasked with raising charitable donations. Any team that raises $10,000 or more will automatically qualify for the national finals, as will the low gross and low net team from each regional qualifier.

The top national fundraising team will also receive pro-am spots in each of the three PGA Tour events that benefit the Tiger Woods Foundation: the Quicken Loans National, Deutsche Bank Championship and World Challenge.

"Combining competition with philanthropy has been an amazing experience for me, and I look forward to seeing Charity Playoff competitors take on this challenge," Woods said as part of a media release. "Between the prestigious tournament venues and the chance to support a great cause, I'm excited to see participants enjoy this opportunity to give back."

Thus far, the most popular qualifying site is Merion Golf Club. A total of 35 donors have already signed up for the June 9 qualifier at the course that hosted the 2013 U.S. Open, raising a total of $77,000 in charitable donations.
