WMPO swapping date to match Phoenix Super Bowl

Although the PGA Tour is months away from releasing its 2014-15 schedule, GolfChannel.com has confirmed that there will be at least a few tweaks to the West Coast swing.

Tournament officials at the Farmers Insurance Open confirmed this week that the event will be played a week later because of a schedule swap with the Waste Management Phoenix Open.

The Phoenix stop will be played Jan. 29-Feb. 1 to coincide with the Super Bowl which will also be played in Phoenix, followed by the Farmers Insurance Open Feb. 5-8.

Peter Ripa, the chief executive officer for the annual Southern California event, said the swap is a “one off” to accommodate the Super Bowl and may actually help strengthen the field at Torrey Pines.

“The Middle East swing on the European Tour will be over so guys won’t have to worry about that,” Ripa said.

Still unknown is the location and future title sponsor of the WGC-Match Play Championship. This year’s event was the last for Accenture and Dove Mountain near Tucson, which had hosted the event since 2007, and Tour officials said in February they would prefer to keep the World Golf Championship on the West Coast.
