Big Break Gainey Makes Wachovia Field

2007 Wachovia ChampionshipTommy Gainey earned a really big break this week by Monday qualifying for the Wachovia Championship.
Gainey, of Big Break IV and Big Break VII fame, shot 5-under 67 at Firethorne Country Club to earn one of four spots into this weeks high-class field in Charlotte, N.C.

Tommy Gainey, of Big Break IV and Big Break VII, is competing in his first PGA TOUR event.
Gainey looked like a shoo-in for his first PGA TOUR event after he made the turn in 5 under. He got to 6 under with a birdie on his 12th hole, the third, but then he double-bogeyed the fourth. A pair of birdies helped the recovery process, but he gave them right back with another double-bogey at the seventh, the same hole on which he made 10 in a pre-qualifying tournament a week ago. A birdie at the last, however, got him into a four-man playoff for three spots.
Gainey parred the first extra hole to stay alive and then birdied the second hole of the playoff to qualify.
Im still in a whirlwind, Gainey said Tuesday to GOLF CHANNEL reporter Steve Sands. Its unbelievable being in the position Im in right now.
Gainey, who is from Bishopville, S.C. and is nicknamed Two Gloves because he wears black gloves on both hands, is in a field that includes 18 of the top 20 players in the world. He is scheduled to tee off Thursday at Quail Hollow at 8:54 a.m. alongside fellow Monday qualifier Michael Putnam and Craig Kanada.
Im with the best players in the world. I feel like Im kind of one of the players this week, he said.
As a member of the field, Gainey gets to enjoy all of the perks, like driving a Mercedes-Benz all week. Now, he just wants to make the experience last an extra two days.
My first goal was to get in, he said. My second goal was to make the cut and then just go from there.
