HUMACAO, Puerto Rico -- Senior Kristina Engstrom registered her third career individual victory on Saturday as she posted a career-best three-day total of 215 at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic in Humacao, Puerto Rico. The Blue Devils also cruised to the team title by 29 strokes at the Par 72, 6,000-yard Palmas Del Mar Country Club.
Duke took home the team title with a season-best 872 as Georgia (901), Florida (903), Tulsa (905), Kent State (907), South Carolina (908), Wake Forest (909), Oklahoma State (911) and Auburn (913) round out the top 10. The Blue Devils had a final round best 293 on Saturday to finish the tournament only eight-over-par.
Engstrom fired a final round 71 to pick up her first individual title of the season. The Djursholm, Sweden native, finished one-under-par for the tournament by posting rounds of 75-69-71. Junior Virada Nirapathpongporn (Bangkok, Thailand) and sophomore Niloufar Aazam-Zanganeh (Lausanne, Switzerland) each finished tied for fifth with a total of 219. Nirapathpongporn led the individual competition after the first two rounds but turned in a 78 on Saturday to slip to fifth. Aazam-Zanganeh continued her stellar play with an even par 72 today.
Junior Leigh Anne Hardin (Martinsville, Ind.) also notched an even par score of 72 Saturday to finish ninth, while Liz Janangelo (West Hartford, Conn.) had a 79 to finish 36th (231).
On the weekend, Engstrom, Nirapathpongporn, Aazam-Zanganeh and Hardin collected seven even or under par rounds. The victory for the Blue Devils is the eighth consecutive spring victory dating back to last season.
