Elon Wins Shamrock Intercollegiate

College CentralTEGA CAY, S.C. -- Katie Knoepffler fired a tournament-low 74 as Elon overcame a seven-shot deficit to capture the Shamrock Intercollegiate title Sunday on the 5,842-yard Tega Cay Golf Course.
Knoepffler's 2-over-par 74 ignited Elon's tournament-low 316 on the final day of the three-round event. Knoepffler (79-88-74--241) finished second in the 71-player competition to Ferris State's Kathryn Bobbie (79-79-76--234).
The Phoenix (319-341-316--976) ended up heads and shoulders above the rest of the 13-team field of Western Carolina (321-332-338--991), St. Mary's of Texas (335-345-321--1001), Ferris State (349-346-322-1017), host Winthrop (346-350-328--1024), Gardner-Webb (346-345-342--1033), Mercer (343-348-346--1037), Longwood (349-364-327--1040), Wofford (351-346-360--1057), St. Francis of Pennsylvania (346-353-363-1062), Queens of Charlotte (371-372-358--1101), Tusculum (370-389-377--1136) and Tennessee State (474-455-475--1404).
Elon leapt to the top of the leaderboard at the end of Friday's first-round action with a 319-321 edge over Western Carolina. The Catamounts stormed past the Phoenix with a 332-341 second-round performance to take a 653-660 lead Saturday. Elon blew past WCU 316-338 on the final day to claim the crown.
Phoenix players Alison Mangini (tied-5th, 82-84-79--245), Morgan Olds (8th, 79-84-85--248), Becky Poindexter (tied-13th, 86-85-82--253) and Sammy Sue Wilson (tied-20th, 79-96-81--256) all finished among the tournament's top 20 performers. Competing as an individual, Elon's Kate Polchlopek (99-97-96--292) ended up tied for 61st.
