Europeans Battle for Seve Trophy


European TourThe Ryder Cup-style Seve Trophy visits the Wynard Golf Club in Billingham, England for the biennial match that pits Continental Europe against Great Britain and Ireland.
Normally coming together for the chance to knock around the Americans at the Ryder Cup, this event splits up the fun-loving Europeans into two groups: The GB&I team captained by Scotland's Colin Montgomerie and a team fielded from Continental Europe captained this year by Jose Maria Olazabal.
Seve Ballesteros, the tournament's namesake, has had to relinquish his captain's duties to his fellow Spaniard Olazabal due to injuries. Normally, the captains play the final singles match against one another. Monty leads that series against Seve, 2-1.

Great Britain & Ireland: Colin Montgomerie - Captain (Scotland); Paul Casey (England); Stephen Dodd (Wales); Nick Dougherty (England); Bradley Dredge (Wales); Padraig Harrington (Ireland); David Howell (England); Paul McGinley (Ireland); Graeme McDowell (N.Ireland) and Ian Poulter (England) for the GB&I.
Continental Europe: Jos Maria Olazabal - Captain (Spain);Thomas Bjorn (Denmark); Emanuele Canonica (Italy); Niclas Fasth (Sweden); Peter Hanson (Sweden); Miguel Angel Jimenez (Spain); Maarten Lafeber (Netherlands); Thomas Levet (France); Henrik Stenson (Sweden) and Jean-Francois Remesy (France).

The four-day event begins with five Fourball matches each on the first two days followed by four Greensomes and Foursome matches on Saturday and then finishes up with the 10 singles matches on Sunday.
Olazabal is ties for the all-time points leader for Continental Europe with fellow Spaniard Jimenez at 6.5 points. Harrington leads the GB&I team with 9 points.
