HOUSTON, Texas -- The Texas golf team completed the final round of the 2003 WAC Championship and captured the title with a 862 total, three strokes above second-place Tulsa (865), and UTEP coming in third with 868.
Individually, senior Nick Watney came in second with a 73-66-69=208 (4-4-5) after a sudden death match with Tulsa's David Inglis (68-69-71=208) (4-4-4). Watney also earned First-Team All-WAC.
Junior Chad Spencer (Rocklin, Calif.) came in third with 211 (72-70-69). Spencer also earned Second-Team All -WAC. Freshman Ryan McDonald tied for 22nd with 223 (73-71-79), sophomore Ryan Carter (Hacienda Heights, Calif.) tied for 32nd with 225 (74-72-79) and junior Jeremy Moreno (Visalia, Calif.) finished 43rd with 234 (81-79-74).
'These guys played courageous golf. With the wind and everything these guys played well, I am proud of them,' head coach Mike Watney said.
Coach Watney also earned WAC Coach of the Year. 'It is all a reflection on how your players play throughout the year, not just one tournament. I do appreciate it,' coach Watney said.
Next action for the 'Dogs will be May 15-17 at the NCAA West Regional in Seattle, Washington.
