PETER KESSLER
NOW WE HAVE A GOOD FRIEND OF YOURS, A GOOD FRIEND OF OUR ACTUALLY WITH US, A GREAT GOLF WRITER FROM THE GLOBE AND MAIL, CANADA'S DAILY NEWSPAPER, LORNE RUBENSTEIN. HOW ARE YOU MY BUDDY?

LORNE RUBENSTEIN, GOLF WRITER
I'M DOING FINE PETER. HOW YOU DOING?

PETER KESSLER
VERY WELL SIR.

LORNE RUBENSTEIN, GOLF WRITER
GOOD. NOW A LOT OF YOUR VIEWERS MIGHT NOT KNOW THAT UH LORIE FROM CHARLOTTETOWN HAS A HORSE RACE NAMED AFTER HER, THE LORIE KANE PACE,

IN CHARLOTTETOWN.

LORIE KANE
(GIGGLE)

LORNE RUBENSTEIN, GOLF WRITER
I WAS THERE WITH HER LAST YEAR AT A CHARITY GOLF TOURNAMENT. AND WE WENT TO THE RACES THAT NIGHT. AND I DIDN'T WIN A DAMN CANADIAN DOLLAR ON THAT THING, BUT I HAD A GOOD TIME.

UH I WANTED TO MAKE ONE . ASK LORIE ONE QUESTION HERE. NOW WITH ALL OF THIS TALK, LORIE, ABOUT UH YOUR FINISHING SECOND SO OFTEN. AND UH, 'WHEN ARE YOU GONNA WIN?' AND SO ON AND SO FORTH. I REMEMBER WHEN DAVID DUVAL HADN'T WON YET AND EVEN AFTER HE HAD WON A COUPLE OF TIMES,

HE SAID VERY CLEARLY THAT HE THINKS THERE IS ALMOST TOO MUCH EMPHASIS PUT ON WINNING, NOT SO MUCH IN GOLF, BUT IN GENERAL IN OUR SOCIETY.

LORIE KANE
UH-HUH.

LORNE RUBENSTEIN, GOLF WRITER
AND HE SAID, YOU KNOW, IF I WAS GOING TO TALK TO A GROUP OF KIDS, I WOULDN'T NECESSARILY WANT TO GIVE THEM THE OPINION OR THE VIEW THAT WINNING IS EVERYTHING AS IT IS IN SPORTS. AND THERE'S??? SO MANY OTHER ELEMENTS OF OUR SOCIETY.

I'M JUST WONDERING IF YOU HAVE ANY . ANY VIEWS ON THAT. I MEAN, DO WE TALK ABOUT AND EMPHASIZE WINNING TOO MUCH? I MEAN, IT'S NOT LIKE YOU'RE DOING SO BADLY FINISHING SECOND. YOU'RE MAKING SOME NICE MONEY AND HAVING A GOOD TIME OUT THERE.

LORIE KANE
I AGREE WITH YOU A HUNDRED PERCENT, LORNE. UH, ONE OF THE REASONS THAT UH . IN THE BEGINNING OF MY CAREER, UH, I DECIDED THAT MY GOAL WOULD BE TO LOWER MY STROKE AVERAGE AND WORK ON THE THINGS THAT I NEEDED TO DO TO DO THAT .

WAS TO TAKE THE PRESSURE AWAY FROM TRYING TO WIN. UM, AS I SAID EARLIER, UH, I'M READY TO WIN. SO, IN TALKING ABOUT WINNING FOR ME NOW, IT'S . IT'S A FORM OF BUILDING MY CONFIDENCE.

UM, I WAS ALWAYS TAUGHT IT'S NOT HOW YOU, YOU KNOW, WIN OR LOSE. IT'S HOW YOU PLAY THE GAME. AND, I THINK THE MOST IMPORTANT THING, AND I AGREE WITH DAVID DUVAL, WHO I'VE NEVER MET AND WOULD LIKE TO, IS THAT WHEN YOU'RE TELLING KIDS, UH, ABOUT PLAYING SPORT OR BEING INVOLVED IN ATHLETICS,

UH WINNING SHOULDN'T BE SOMETHING YOU TALK ABOUT. UH, IT'S . IT'S NOT A HEALTHY THING TO DO BECAUSE I THINK IT ADDS TOO MUCH STRESS TO .

TO A YOUNG CHILD'S LIFE AND . AND HOW THEY CAN GROW THROUGH THE GAME . AND WHATEVER GAME IT IS.

UM, I THINK YOU NEED TO . TO PUT YOUR BEST FOOT FORWARD, ENJOY WHAT YOU'RE DOING. AND IN GOLF, UM, AT THE END OF THE DAY, AT THE . ON SUNDAY, IF YOU CAN LOOK UP AND SEE YOUR NAME AT THE TOP OF THE LEADERBOARD,

THEN YOU'VE KNOWN YOU'VE DONE WELL AND YOU'VE PLAYED YOUR BEST. UH, IF YOU'RE NOT THERE AND YOU CAN STILL SAY 'I . I GAVE IT MY ALL. I DID THE BEST I COULD.'

UM, THEN YOU'VE GOT NOTHING TO LOSE, NOTHING LOST.

PETER KESSLER
LORNE, WHY IN YOUR VIEW IS SHE REGARDED AS SUCH A HERO IN CANADA?

LORNE RUBENSTEIN, GOLF WRITER
WELL, I THINK FIRST OF ALL SHE UH . HANDLES HERSELF SO WELL ON AND OFF THE GOLF COURSE. I'VE BEEN WITH LORIE AT . AT MANY, MANY GOLF TOURNAMENTS AND AT HER HOME IN CHARLOTTETOWN, PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND.

AND UH, ALTHOUGH EVERYBODY LOVES THERE, SHE'S ALSO JUST ONE OF THE PEOPLE OUT THERE. SHE ... SHE CAN REMEMBER NAMES LIKE NOBODY CAN REMEMBER NAMES. UH, SHE'S JUST GENUINE AND DOWN TO EARTH, HAS A LOT OF FUN WITH PEOPLE.

AND I THINK THAT UH WHILE SO MANY YO -- PROS OR PEOPLE ARE TURNING PRO AT VERY YOUNG AGES THESE DAYS, PARTICULARLY IN MEN'S GOLF, YOU KNOW, YOU'LL SEE IT WITH SERGIO GARCIA, WITH - AND JUSTIN ROSE AND . AND THAT'S ONE WAY TO DO IT, OF COURSE.

LORIE ALSO SHOWS US THAT THERE ARE OTHER SIDES TO LIFE BESIDES GOLF HAVING WAITED UNTIL MUCH LATER COMPARED TO MOST PLAYERS, UH, TO UH . TO TAKE UP THE GAME PROFESSIONALLY. AND UH,

SHE'S JUST A DECENT PERSON, YOU KNOW. SHE ALWAYS RETURNS PHONE CALLS. IF YOU CALL HER ON HER CELL PHONE, THE UH . THE ANSWERING MESSAGE THAT SHE HAS THANKS HER SPONSORS. UH, SHE LOOKS PEOPLE IN THE EYE.

JUST A DECENT PERSON AND REALLY UH . UH . A JOURNALIST'S DREAM TO . TO TALK TO ALL THE TIME.

LORIE KANE
THANKS LORNE.

LORNE RUBENSTEIN, GOLF WRITER
YOU BET LORIE.

PETER KESSLER
YOU OWE HIM BIG TIME NOW. LORNE, GREAT TO BE WITH YOU AGAIN.

LORNE RUBENSTEIN, GOLF WRITER
OKAY, THANK YOU PETER.

PETER KESSLER
LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU IN OUR STUDIO SOON.

LORNE RUBENSTEIN, GOLF WRITER
ALRIGHTY, BYE-BYE.

PETER KESSLER
BACK UP TO CANADA, LET'S GO TO BRITISH COLUMBIA AND SEE WHAT BOB WANTS TO KICK AROUND. HELLO BOB.

BOB, CALLER FROM BRITISH COLUMBIA (MALE):
GOOD EVENING PETER. GOOD EVENING LORIE.

LORIE KANE
HI BOB.

BOB, CALLER FROM BRITISH COLUMBIA (MALE):
IT - YOU'RE A GREAT AMBASSADOR FOR THE WOMEN'S GOLF UH LORIE, YOU AND THE OTHER GIR -- CANADIAN GIRLS THAT ARE ON TOUR RIGHT NOW. AND I KNOW THERE'S A MAJOR WIN JUST AROUND THE CORNER FOR YA.

LORIE KANE
WELL I APPRECIATE THAT.

BOB, CALLER FROM BRITISH COLUMBIA (MALE):
UM .

I HAVE A QUESTION AND ALSO AN INVITATION TO YOU, IF YOU'RE SCHEDULE WOULD ALLOW IT, THAT WE HAVE A CANADIAN OPEN BLIND GOLF TOURNAMENT HERE IN CANADA IN SEPTEMBER.

LORIE KANE
UH-HUH.

BOB, CALLER FROM BRITISH COLUMBIA (MALE):
AND I DON'T KNOW IF YOU SEEN ANY, UH, BLIND GOLFING EVENTS, BUT UH, I KNOW, I BELIEVE, HAS.

AND MY QUESTION IS . DO YOU BELIEVE - IS THERE ROOM FOR MORE LPGA TOURS IN CANADA?

LORIE KANE
UM . DEFINITELY. UH, I THINK WITH THE INTRODUCTION OF THE NATIONS CUP THIS YEAR, UH I THINK IT'S GONNA BE ANOTHER STEP TO, UH, SHOWING A LITTLE BIT OF MORE THE PROFESSIONAL SIDE OF . OF GOLF UH AND THE WOMEN'S SIDE OF IT IN CANADA.

UH, I THINK THE MEN HANDLE TWO TOURNAMENTS QUITE WELL UH WITH THE BELL OPEN AND THE TOURNAMENT IN VANCOUVER. UM .

I . YOU KNOW, I DON'T KNOW, UH, THE -- WHERE DU MAURIER AND THE CLASSIC STANDS. UH, FOR THE NEXT COUPLE YEARS, I KNOW WE'LL PLAY THIS YEAR AND .

AND I HOPE IT CONTINUES FOREVER. BUT UH, LEGISLATION, WHICH I KNOW NOTHING ABOUT, IS PROBABLY GONNA PULL THE PLUG ON IT OR THEY THINK THAT MAY HAPPEN.

UM, I WOULD REALLY LIKE TO SEE THE NATIONS CUP GROW INTO SOMETHING EVEN BIGGER, MAYBE UH LIKE A WORLD CUP. UH IT'S GOING TO BE BETWEEN CANADA AND THE U.S. AND UH TOP 5 PLAYERS, WHO JUDY RANKIN WILL CAPTAIN, AND SAN - SANDRA UM .

SANDRA, I'M FORGETTING YOUR .

PETER KESSLER
POST?

LORIE KANE
YES, EXCUSE ME. THANK YOU PETER.

PETER KESSLER
MY PLEASURE.

LORIE KANE
I HAD A BLANK THERE. SORRY SANDRA. UH, WILL CAPTAIN OUR TEAM. AND, I THINK IT'S GONNA BE MATCH PLAY SIMILAR TO THE SOLHEIM CUP. UH, BUT I WOULD LIKE TO SEE IT EXTENDED TO MORE COUNTRIES UH .

AND KEEP IT IN CANADA, UH BUT MORE COUNTRIES. AND UH, I THINK IT'LL BE A GREAT EVENT.

PETER KESSLER
LET ME GET YOU OFF THE HOOK. YOU WANTED TO ASK A QUESTION, RIGHT, INSTEAD OF KEEP ANSWERING THEM? WHAT WAS THE QUESTION

YOU WANTED TO ASK?

LORIE KANE
YES, I DID. UM, I'M GOING HOME, AS I'VE TOLD YOU, I'VE TAKEN THE NEXT TWO WEEKS OFF. AND, I HAVE A GROUP OF FRIENDS WHO PLAY AT MY HOME COURSE AT BELVEDERE AND THEY'RE CALLED THE 'TUESDAY GROUP'.

AND I'M WONDERING IF JOEY, CHRIS AND DOYLEY??? COULD FIND ROOM IN THEIR . CAN I BE YOUR FOURTH, UH, FOR TUESDAY?

UM, JOEY, YOU CAN GIVE ME A CALL AND LET ME KNOW, THANKS. (LAUGH)

PETER KESSLER
UH, THAT WAS THE QUESTION AND I BET WE KNOW THE ANSWER AND WE'LL BE RIGHT BACK.
