PETER KESSLER
MAN THAT, YOUR SWING WAS AS FAST AS HOGAN'S, WASN'T IT?

TOMMY BOLT
YEAH PETER. YOU HAD TO TAKE TWO CAMERAS TO CATCH MY SWING BACK IN THOSE DAYS.

PETER KESSLER
(LAUGHS)

SO WHAT ARE THE THREE OR FOUR THINGS THAT HAVE MADE IT WORK FOR SO LONG FOR YOU?

TOMMY BOLT
PETER, WHEN I FIRST STARTED PLAYING OUT THERE ON THE TOUR, I HAD THIS LEFT HAND WAY OVER HERE. NOT THAT FAR OVER, BUT ABOUT RIGHT THERE, AND, BOY EVERY TIME I DREW IT BACK I HAD TO

BLOCK THAT THING OUT, BLOCK THAT, I'M BLOCKING THE HOOK OUT, THAT LEFT HAND WANTED TO GO OVER, YOU KNOW, WHEN YOU RELEASE YOUR HAND, YOUR LEFT HAND CAN TURN OVER TOO QUICK.

I WENT TO HOGAN IN 1955. I'D ALREADY WON TOURNAMENTS BUT I DIDN'T KNOW HOW I WON THEM, REALLY. I DIDN'T, I, I, I WON THEM BECAUSE I COULD GET IT UP AND DOWN AND HOLE ALL THE PUTTS AND HE CHANGED MY GRIP. HE PUT MY LEFT

HAND ON THERE, LIKE THAT. THE BACK THREE FINGERS OF THE LEFT HAND ACROSS THE PALM, JUST LIKE THAT. THAT'S THE WAY YOU HOLD THE CLUB.

HE SAID WE'LL ALL BE BETTER PLAYERS IF WE'D AMPUTATE THIS THUMB AND FOREFINGER HERE AND GRIP IT LIKE YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO. THAT'S THE WAY YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO HOLD THE CLUB AT THE TOP OF THE SWING, RIGHT THERE.

PETER KESSLER
WHERE DO YOU LIKE TO SEE YOUR THUMB AND FOREFINGER?

TOMMY BOLT
RIGHT DOWN THE SHAFT. RIGHT DOWN THE SHAFT JUST LIKE THAT, IN THE, IN THE NEUTRAL POSITION, PETER. THAT'S NEUTRAL. WHAT THEY CALL NEUTRAL.

PETER KESSLER
AND RIGHT HAND NEUTRAL, TOO?

TOMMY BOLT
YEAH, WELL YOUR RIGHT HAND SLIGHTLY TO THE RIGHT, RIGHT THERE SO YOU CAN RELEASE THAT POWER. YOUR RIGHT HAND IS YOUR POWER AND YOU HAVE TO UTILIZE THAT RIGHT HAND IN ORDER TO GET THE DISTANCE. YEAH, THOSE HANDS

HAVE TO WORK TOGETHER AS A UNIT. YOUR HANDS ARE PART OF THE SWING AND IF YOU DON'T USE YOUR HANDS YOU'RE NOT GETTING THE MAXIMUM OF YOUR POWER. THAT'S ALL IT TOTALS UP TO.

PETER KESSLER
DO YOU FEEL LIKE IT WAS YOUR HANDS AND ARMS THAT WERE THE ENGINE THAT DROVE YOUR GOLF SWING AND THAT YOUR BODY RESPONDED OR NOT?

TOMMY BOLT
YEAH I THOUGHT, I, I THINK IT WAS MY HANDS AND ARMS, YES I DO, PETER, AND ALL I DID WAS SWING THE CLUB AND LET THOSE HANDS RELEASE, AND THAT'S THE WAY YOU GET YOUR DISTANCE.

PETER KESSLER
WHAT ABOUT, WHAT WERE YOUR THOUGHTS ON SET UP AND, AND KEEPING GOOD BALANCE?

TOMMY BOLT
WELL BALANCE IS VERY IMPORTANT. BELIEVE ME IT IS. YOU HAVE TO HAVE GOOD BALANCE. THAT'S ONE THING THAT TIGER WOODS HAS. HE HAS SUPER BALANCE. HE COULDN'T HAVE STOOD IN

THAT BUNKER AND HIT THAT 6 IRON ACROSS THAT WATER TO THAT 5 PAR HOLE

PETER KESSLER
AT THE CANADIAN OPEN LAST YEAR

TOMMY BOLT
IN THE CANADIAN OPEN. THAT SAND, HE STOOD IN THE SAND. HE HAD TO STAND FLAT FOOTED BOY, YOU CAN'T MOVE THOSE FEET, YOU KNOW, IN THAT SAND, YOU'D SLIP ALL OVER THE PLACE AND SO

THAT JUST SHOWS YOU THAT BALANCE IS VERY IMPORTANT.

PETER KESSLER
IS IT SOMETHING YOU EVER HAD TO WORK ON OR THINK ABOUT DURING YOUR GOLF SWING OR DID THAT COME TO YOU EASILY?

TOMMY BOLT
UH PETER, I'VE ALWAYS HAD A PRETTY FAST TEMPO. YES, I, I'VE WORKED ON MY TEMPO. I TRIED TO SLOW MY SWING DOWN A LITTLE BIT TO GET COORDINATED, SO I COULD GET IT ALL TOGETHER AND I STILL, I THINK THAT'S
VERY IMPORTANT, IS TEMPO.

PETER KESSLER
DID THE FACT THAT YOUR BACK SWING WAS FAIRLY SHORT IN TERMS OF WHERE YOUR ARMS WOULD FINISH MAKE IT EASIER FOR YOU TO GET EVERYTHING IN THE RIGHT SEQUENCE?

TOMMY BOLT
WELL, I'VE GOT A LITTLE ARTHRITIS NOW, PART OF THE BACK AND IT'S HARD TO GET ANY FURTHER BACK THEN THAT, PETER.

PETER KESSLER
YEAH BUT YOU WERE SWINGING THAT WAY IN 1958, TOO. IT WAS SORT OF VERY THREE QUARTERS WASN'T IT?

TOMMY BOLT
YEAH, IT WASN'T REALLY A LONG SWING. NO I NEVER HAD A LONG SWING. I TOOK IT BACK ABOUT, WELL, I, I GUESS ABOUT THREE QUARTERS, YEAH .

PETER KESSLER
WHAT, WHAT ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF MAINTAINING WHAT EVER GRIP PRESSURE YOU STARTED WITH AT ADDRESS? WAS THAT AN ISSUE?

TOMMY BOLT
PETER, HOGAN TOLD ME YOU'VE GOT TO HOLD ONTO THE CLUB AT THE TOP OF THE SWING. HE NEVER TOLD ME ABOUT, ANYTHING ABOUT GRIP PRESSURE, BUT
YOU'VE GOT TO GRIP THE CLUB, NOT A DEATH GRIP, BUT GRIP IT HARD ENOUGH

TO HOLD ONTO THE CLUB AT THE TOP OF THE SWING. THE, MOST ALL SHOTS ARE MISSED RIGHT UP HERE, AT THE TOP OF THE SWING. THAT'S WHERE YOUR HANDS COME OFF THE CLUB, AND SOME PEOPLE HAVE THOSE BIG LONG SWINGS AND THEY OVER SWING AND THOSE HANDS COME

LOOSE LIKE THAT AND THEY REGRIP IT ON THE DOWNSWING, SO THEY'VE LOST COMPLETE CONTROL OF THE CLUBHEAD. I WANT TO TAKE IT BACK AS FAR, AS YOUR SHOULDERS TURN, IN OTHER WORDS.

PETER KESSLER
DO YOU FEEL LIKE YOU WERE SWINGING WITH ALL OF YOUR POWER OR JUST MOST OF YOUR POWER?

TOMMY BOLT
WELL, I NEVER REALLY TRIED TO HIT IT THAT HARD. I PLAYED, I NEVER SWUNG AT IT LIKE TIGER WOODS. I NEVER TRIED TO HIT IT THAT HARD, NO. I, I TRIED TO HIT IT WITHIN MYSELF TO CONTROL THE BALL.

PETER KESSLER
A LITTLE BIT LIKE SAM.

TOMMY BOLT
YEAH, SNEAD, SNEAD'S GOT, HAD BEAUTIFUL TEMPO.

PETER KESSLER
WHENEVER YOU WOULD PLAY WITH HIM AND STEAL THAT TEMPO.

TOMMY BOLT
STEEL THAT TEMPO FROM HIM. YEAH THAT'S, THAT'S GOOD.

PETER KESSLER
SO HE WAS THE GUY TO PLAY GOLF WITH ON WEDNESDAYS, RIGHT?

PETER KESSLER
WELL YOU GOT TO PLAY GOLF WITH SAM ON, ON, ON TUESDAYS AND WEDNESDAYS, BECAUSE HE'LL, YOU'LL DEVELOP SOME TEMPO OFF OF HIM.

PETER KESSLER
WE'LL COME RIGHT BACK. DON'T GO AWAY. LET'S TAKE A LOOK AT A FEW OF THE CAREER HIGHLIGHTS AS WE LEAVE YOU FOR A MINUTE.

THAT WAS PERFECT.
