Gray stands by Pavin comment

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. – U.S. Ryder Cup captain Corey Pavin has refuted a report by Golf Channel contributor Jim Gray saying that he’ll select Tiger Woods as a captain’s pick for the October matches if Woods does not automatically qualify.

Golf Channel contributor Jim Gray stands by his quote from Corey Pavin that the U.S. Ryder Cup captain would definitely use a captain's pick on Tiger Woods. Pavin denied making that comment Wednesday morning on his Twitter page.

“For the record, @golfchannel and Jim Gray has misquoted me re: picking Tiger. I never said such a thing and will not say a thing until 09/07,” Pavin posted on his Twitter account Wednesday morning.

Gray contends that the two had a brief conversation Tuesday in the Whistling Straits clubhouse and Pavin said, “Of course I’m going to [pick him]. He’s the best player in the world.”

Pavin met with the press Wednesday afternoon and again stood by his earlier tweet saying, 'Let's straighten this out right now. I had a conversation with Jim Gray yesterday just outside the locker room near where we registered and he asked me a few questions and his interpretation of what I said is incorrect.

'There's nobody that's promised any picks right now. It would be disrespectful to everybody that's trying to make the team. I've got quite a few people I'm looking at. I would not disrespect any of the players that are potential players on the team, and obviously there was a misinterpretation of what I said, and that is an incorrect quote.'

When contacted Wednesday, Gray says that he stands by the report and did not misquote Pavin.
