2010 Tournament Awards R&A World Amateur Golf Ranking Points For First Time,
Winners Qualify For Duke of York Young Champions Trophy in England
(SHENZHEN, China) – Mission Hills' major commitment to junior golf development has received further international recognition with confirmation that the Mission Hills Jack Nicklaus Junior Championship will offer R&A World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) points for the first time in 2010. The tournament's third edition will be played on the Nicklaus-designed World Cup Course from May 26-28 at Mission Hills Shenzhen.
In addition to being a part of the ranking system for the world's top amateurs for the first time, the tournament's overall winners in the boys' and girls' divisions will once again be invited to September's Duke of York Young Champions Trophy in England.
The prestigious event will be played at the famed Royal St. George's links from September 14-16. Boasting players such as Rory McIlroy and women's world No. 6 Anna Nordqvist as participants in recent years, the Duke of York tournament is an outstanding opportunity for the Nicklaus champions to play on the international stage.
The overall winners of both the boys' and girls' divisions in the Nicklaus Championship will secure a trip back to Mission Hills in the Faldo Series Asia Grand Final early next year.
'We're honored to once again partner with Jack Nicklaus to make affordable tournament competition available for the region's best juniors,' says Tenniel Chu, Executive Director, Mission Hills China. 'Jack's passion for growing golf in Asia is admirable and a sentiment we share wholeheartedly.' Adds Chu, 'Regular exposure to tournament pressure is vital to cultivating the next generation of top Asian touring professionals. This guiding principle is a focal point of our junior golf initiatives.'
More than 75 competitors in four age categories (Under 15 and Under 18 for boys and girls) will do battle over 54 holes of stroke play at Mission Hills. Headlining the field is defending champion Steven Lam of Hong Kong, along with 2009 Faldo Series Asia China Championship winner, China's Jian Chuang Lin.
Mission Hills' other commitments to junior golf include its role as official home of the Faldo Series Asia, creation of the Mission Hills Golf Series Junior Tour, instruction programs at its three golf academies specifically geared toward young players, and regular scheduling of clinics from greats of the game like Nicklaus, Greg Norman, Nick Faldo and Vijay Singh.
