Lady Blue Devils Maintain Advantage

College CentralCLEMMONS, N.C.-- The top-ranked Duke women's golf team fired a team-best round of 286 on Friday and leads by nine strokes at the NCAA East Regional in Clemmons, N.C. at the Par 71, 6,116-Yard Salem Glen Golf Club.
 
The Blue Devils own a two-day total of 574 with Vanderbilt (583), Georgia (584), North Carolina (588), Auburn (589), South Carolina (590), Florida State (592), Arizona (592), Wake Forest (592) and Furman (600) rounding out the top 10. With one round remaining, the top eight teams will next advance to the NCAA Championships on May 20-23 in West Lafayette, Ind.
 
Duke was led by the reigning NCAA Champion, Virada Nirapathpongporn, who carded a 3-under-par score of 68 with five birdies on the day. The Bangkok, Thailand product and 2001 East Region Champion, is tied fourth individually with a 141 and sits three strokes back of leader Meaghan Francella of North Carolina (138).
 
Both Liz Janangelo and Kristina Engstrom each posted rounds of 72 on day two for the Blue Devils. Janangelo is tied seventh with a 143, while Engstrom moved into tied 27th with a 149. Junior Leigh Anne Hardin is now tied 11th with a two-day total of 145 after carding a 74 on Friday. Sophomore Niloufar Aazam-Zanganeh turned in a 75 and sits tied 22nd individually.
 
The Blue Devils will tee off beginning at 12:30 PM in the final round on Saturday. Duke will play with Vanderbilt and Georgia. Duke is the two-time defending NCAA East Region champions.
