Lady Buckeyes Capture Big Ten Title

College CentralIOWA CITY, Iowa -- The Ohio State women's golf team shot a tournament-low 294 Sunday in the final round of the Big Ten championships to successfully defend its title. The Buckeyes, who had the low score in each round, finished with a mark of 1,194 (302-303-295-294), 29 strokes ahead of second-place Wisconsin. The event was held at the par-73 Finkbine Golf Course (6,053 yards) in Iowa City, Iowa.
 
The Buckeyes were the first team to defend their title since Indiana won back-to-back titles in 1995 and 1996. The victory also marked the 12th Big Ten championship in the program's history and the fifth under head coach Therese Hession.
 
It was Ohio State's third tournament win of the 2003-03 season. The Buckeyes also claimed first place at the Central District Invitational and Lady Buckeye Spring Invitational.
 
Ohio State junior Allison Hanna (Portland, Ore./David Douglas) earned her first career medalist honors, shooting 73 in the final round to finish with a mark of 294. It marked the third consecutive year a Buckeye has earned individual medalist honors. Mollie Fankhauser won the title in 2001 and 2002.
 
Hanna tied for the individual title with Indiana's Karen Dennison.
 
Sophomore Lindsay Knowlton (Toronto, Ontario/Havergal) placed in a tie for fifth with a score of 294. Jennifer Selfinger (Fr., Columbus, Ohio/Groveport) shot a career-low 72 in the final round to finish tied for 11 at 303. Kristen White (So., Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) tied for 18th with a score of 307 while Allyson Harvie (Fr., Grass Valley, Calif./Bear River) finished 22nd, shooting 309. Erin Borowiec (So., South Lyon, Mich./Mercy) placed in a tie for 37th at 317.
 
The Buckeyes have qualified to compete in the 2003 NCAA Regional, scheduled for May 8-10. Teams and locations for the three regional events will be announced Monday.
