Los Angeles wins Amateur Tour Team Championship


LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. ' The Golf Channel Amateur Tour National Team Championship came to a close Monday after the team from Los Angeles took the victory over St. Louis, which began the day leading. This win proved to be significant for Los Angeles because it was only its second year on the tour and it took the victory by 10 points with 437 over St Louis' 427.
A field of 44, 12-person teams from local tours across the country competed in the Ryder Cup-style tournament. The teams, comprised of two members from each of the six flights, faced off in over 45 holes in three different formats: team best ball, modified alternate shot and individual match play.
'To win on a national stage feels great,' says Charles Herring, a member Team L.A. He and his partner Steve Daughtrey finished without losing a match throughout the event. Steve added, 'being 56-years-old and having started playing golf with my grandfather, this is the pinnacle, this is it.'
Many of the players who were competing now look forward to the individual championship which begins later this week where over 500 golfers will go head-to-head to win the championship.
The tournament will take place on four of Orlando's premier courses, including Grand Cypress Golf Club, The Legends at Orange Lake, Disney's Palm and Disney's Magnolia ' site of next month's PGA Tour Children's Miracle Network Classic.
