Northern Arizona Women Win the Bobcat

College CentralGOODYEAR, Ariz. -- The Northern Arizona University women's golf team won the Bobcat Desert Classic by nine strokes held at the Palm Valley Golf Club. The Lumberjacks, who held a nine-stroke lead after the first round, shot a 307 for a two-day total of 609 to defeat North Texas at 618. Weber State was six strokes back at 625, while Eastern Washington and Portland State tied for fourth at 626.
'This is a really great win,' said head coach Tom McCurdy. 'We played very well the first day. We did not have out best day today but it was a great learning experience for the conference championships.'
The Palm Valley layout will host the 2003 Big Sky Conference Championships in April.
Senior Hanna-Riikka Kuitunen tied for second with a second-round 71, one shot back of Randi Gauthier of North Texas (72-71 143). Junior Julie Heselton shot a 78 to finish nine-over par at 153, tying for ninth overall. Lauren Gray tied for 13th after a second-round 79. Tiina-Maija Peltokoski had a second consecutive 79, while Katie Brenneman posted an 83. Emily von Doehren and Ali Howell, who are both playing as individuals, shot 80 in the second round to tie for 17th.
