As expected, Couples selected Lucas Glover and Hunter Mahan. And in a surprise move, Norman selected Adam Scott and 17-year-old Ryo Ishikawa.
During the PGA Championship, Couples told GolfChannel.com that he was planning to pick Hunter Mahan, who tied for 16th at Hazeltine. Mahan, who played on the winning 2008 Ryder Cup team in Kentucky, does not have a win to his name this year, but he has a handful of top-10 finishes. Mahan and the 2009 U.S. Open champion Glover were both captain’s picks for the 2007 team that won at Royal Montreal.
Japan's Ishikawa has won twice on the Japan Tour in the past 10 weeks, and made the cut last month at the PGA Championship, finishing 56th in just his third major.
Scott, ranked No. 53 in the world, has made just eight cuts this year on the PGA Tour, and notched only two top-25 finishes.
The top 10 players for the U.S. and International teams were set following the final major of the year. When Y.E. Yang captured the Wanamaker Trophy, he earned a spot on his first Presidents Cup team.
The American team consists of Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Jim Furyk, Steve Stricker, Kenny Perry, Zach Johnson, Stewart Cink, Sean O’Hair, Anthony Kim and Justin Leonard. O’Hair and Kim will be making their Presidents Cup debut, although Kim played in the Ryder Cup last year.
The U.S. list was based on PGA Tour earnings the last two years, with the dollar doubled for 2009.
The International team is based on the world ranking.
The International team has Geoff Ogilvy, Vijay Singh, Camilo Villegas, Retief Goosen, Ernie Els, Angel Cabrera, Mike Weir, Robert Allenby, Tim Clark and the aforementioned Yang.
