NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma women's golf team placed first at the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic with a total of 916 after recording a 312 in the final round today at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Course in Norman, Okla. The Sooners won by 22 strokes and marked the third consecutive year they won the event. Texas Tech was second with a total of 938. Five of the six Big 12 teams playing finished in the top five.
Sophomore Emily Milberger braved below-freezing windchills at the 5,910-yard, par-72, course to earn her first collegiate victory with a score of 224. Milberger recorded a 74, the lowest round of the day, in the final round.
'It's a great feeling to be able to step up in these tough conditions and play well,' Milberger said. 'I'm so proud of our team and I hope this team victory will give us momentum heading into the Big 12 Tournament.'
Three other Sooners also finished in the top five. Senior Allison Johnson recorded a final-round 75 and earned fourth-place honors with a 230. Freshman Amparo Gala tied for fifth with a third-round 82 and a total of 233 while junior Lisa Meldrum also tied for fifth after carding an 81 on the final 18 holes. Rounding out the Sooner quintet was junior Hope Edge who tied for 27th place with a 243 after recording an 83 in the final round.
Four other Sooners also competed as individuals in the tournament. Freshman Erin Goranson tied for 31st with a 244. Freshman Cathryn Uselton recorded a total of 251 to finish tied for 58th while sophomore Jenni Nimmo tied for 78th with a 266. Freshman Marie Turner tied for 87th place with a tournament total of 281.
'I'm so excited for the team and individual wins on our home course,' OU head coach Carol Ludvigson said. 'I'm also so excited for Emily to win her first collegiate tournament. She shot 74 today and with the conditions that is under par. She has been fantastic as a sophomore. Also, I hope this victory will give us momentum heading into the Big 12 Tournament.'
The Sooners will begin postseason play April 21-23 in Columbia, Mo., at the Big 12 Tournament.
