ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Trailing by six strokes after two rounds, Southern Illinois tied a single round tournament low of 292 in the final day of play to win its first tournament of the season earlier today at the Billiken Invitational. The Salukis improved their third round score by four strokes prior to finishing with a 883.
SIU, who took first out of 15 schools competing at the Billiken Invite, finished among the top two teams for the second straight tournament. Before today, the Dawgs placed second at the Branson Creek Invite on April 7-8.
Despite standing tied for fourth heading into its final day of play, SIU capitalized on a pair of top-10 finishes by Tim Hoss and Grant Goltz to clinch the crown. Following back-to-back 72s, Hoss carded a final round of 76 en route to tying for fifth.
Meanwhile, Goltz tied an individual tournament-low of 68 in his final 18 holes which wrapped up an eighth-place showing. Goltz, who tied with seven others for that spot, posted a 78 and 75 in his first two rounds. In addition, his round in the 60s marked the Salukis' third this season. Hoss holds the other two marks which came during the fall campaign.
Joining tournament-champion SIU in the top-five were UMKC (2nd, 885), Marquette (3rd, 887), IUPUI (4th, 889) and Eastern Illinois (5th, 890).
SIU will break for six days before returning to action at the Greg Palmer Classic on April 21-22.
