USGA Raises 2002 Purses


Prize money for the U.S. Open, U.S. Women's Open and U.S. Senior Open have been increased for this year's championships, the United States Golf Association has announced.
The Open purse stands at $5.5 million, an increase of $500,000 over last year's amount. First-place money is $1 million. The Open will be played from June 13-16, 2002, at Bethpage State Park (Black Course) in Farmingdale, N.Y.
The Women's Open money total was increased by $100,000 to $3 million, with a first prize of $535,000. The championship will be played from July 4-7 at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan.
The Senior Open purse was increased by $100,000 to $2.5 million, with first place worth $450,000. The championship will be held from June 27-30 at Caves Valley Golf Club in Baltimore, Md.
