18th Hole Pine at Pebble to be Replaced

18th Hole Pine Tree at Pebble BeachPitch canker disease will force the removal of Pebble Beach's 18th hole pine tree. The 80-foot landmark located in the middle of the fairway has become infected by the disease, which can kill a tree in less than six months.

The tree is still in place but course officials have stepped up plans for its removal due to the threat of falling branches to golfers playing the par-5.
Plans are to replace the tree, possibly with another smaller pine located about 50 feet away. Due to the logistical difficulties, removal and replacement costs may run as high as $250,000.
Pitch canker disease also claimed two other pines on Pebble Beach's second hole. Those were replaced by Cypress trees.
