With the matches all tied at two apiece in the finals, the fifth and deciding match was heading up to the 17th green with Augusta State senior Oliver Wilson holding a 1-up lead over Clemson's Matt Hendrix.
Wilson's tee shot landed just shy of the green on the 175-yard par-3, but still offered him a good look at the hole. Pulling out a wedge, Wilson figured to end the match and the tournament with one last shot, as he holed out the chip shot to give Augusta State the title.
'I've never been in a match that's come down to the wire like that,' said Wilson, a Mansfield, England, native. 'With that little bit of green to work with I decided to play it safe, but I didn't want to go to 18.'
It was Augusta State's third team victory of the season to match Clemson's win total for the year, the most for any school in the country.
'It's awesome,' Wilson said of ending the fall season with a victory. 'It gives us tremendous confidence heading into the next year.'
In other action, Arizona beat TCU for third place in the winners consolation finals. The fifth-seeded Wildcats earned a 3-2 victory over the Horned Frogs, despite a loss by U.S. Amateur champion Ricky Barnes.
