Aussies Debate Whether to Cut Tournaments

RSS

The PGA Tour of Australasia has rejected a call to cut tournaments one day after the Australian Golf Union said to do so.

The head of the AGU, Colin Phillips, believes the tour should be cut in half to six tournaments. The six survivors would them increase prize money, which would lure overseas stars, he says.

However, Tour operations director Trevor Herden said any reduction in the number of tournaments will hurt, not help, get the overseas stars.

'We need to increase the benefits for our players on the world tour, to get more players into the U.S. Open and British Open,' said Herden. 'By reducing the tour, we'd never be able to do that.'
