The incident occurred at the sixth hole of the El Saler course, when, after a poor drive left into an area of ice plant, Ballesteros found trouble playing his recovery second shot.
He could only whack his recovery shot about 60 yards forward, commented Tournament Director Miguel Vidaor. He then repeatedly and violently swung his club, thrashing at the plant.
The incident took place in front of spectators and was televised, Vidaor continued. Ballesteros will therefore be sanctioned. No official statement will be made about this.
Ballesteros went on to make bogey and finished with a 4-over round of 76.
