The event, named after Spanish legend Seve Ballesteros, is a team tournament, pitting ten of the best golfers from Continental Europe against the ten best from Great Britian & Ireland. As they were during the inaugural edition of 2000, Ballesteros will captain Continental Europe, while Colin Montgomerie will head the GB&I team. The event is to be contested over three days, with the formats as follows:
Day 1 ' Four foursomes and four fourball matches.
Day 2 ' Four fourball and four greensome matches.
Day 3 ' Ten singles matches.
Scotlands Andrew Oldcorn recently slipped into the 10th spot on the GB&I team following a withdraw from David Howell, when the Englishman fell and cracked a bone in his left arm.
Along with captain Montgomerie, Oldcorn will join the following players for GB&I: Lee Westwood, Steve Webster, Paul Casey, Darren Clarke, Padraig Harrington, Paul Lawrie, Paul McGinley and Ian Woosnam.
Ballesteros Continental Europe team is composed of the following golfers: Alex Cejka, Thomas Bjorn, Niclas Fasth, Mathias Gronberg, Raphael Jacquelin, Miguel Angel Jimenez, Robert Karlsson, Thomas Levet and Jose Maria Olazabal.
Both Bernhard Langer and Sergio Garcia had previously qualified for the Continental team, but declined to play. This years event boasts a total purse of $2.1 million. Each member of the winning team will walk away with a minimum of $132,000, while members of the losing squad are guaranteed a minimum of $79,000.
