Bland shot rounds of 62 and 63 over the Francourt Country Club for a 36-hole total of 19-under-par 125.
The beauty of golf is that, unlike in most other sports, you can still be competitive in your mid-50s, and I guess I proved that today, Bland told reporters following his heroics.
Of the two rounds of golf, Bland recorded 17 birdies and an eagle to offset zero bogeys.
His performance bested second-placed Jean Hugo by four shots.
Hugo ' who shot a second-round 62 himself ' was followed by Trevor Immelman and Ian Hutchings in joint third-place.
Said Bland of host Els: After the first round when I shot 62 and he (Els) shot 68, Ernie said he was going to come at me today.
Well, I couldnt have that sort of cheek from a young guy like him, so I kept on making birdies, and 125 for 36 holes is the lowest Ive ever gone.
